Nutrition Consultations

Two Cats Eating

Golden State Veterinary Specialists provides nutrition consultations strictly on a referral basis in accordance with California Veterinary Medical Board regulations governing the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).

We require that the referring veterinarian maintain an active VCPR with the patient, as defined under California law. Our Nutrition Service does not establish primary care responsibility for the patient and does not replace the role of the primary care veterinarian.

Required Documentation Prior to Consultation

Before a nutrition consultation can be scheduled, the following must be submitted:

• A completed Nutrition Referral Form from the referring veterinarian
• A completed Diet, Activity & Household History Form from the pet owner
• A chemistry panel and urinalysis performed within the last six (6) months
• A fecal examination for ova and parasites performed within the last six (6) months
• All relevant medical records, including current medications and diagnostic findings

Additional diagnostics may be requested based on the patient’s medical history.

Consultation Process

Submission of a referral confirms that:

• The referring veterinarian maintains a current VCPR with the patient in accordance with California law
• The referring veterinarian authorizes Golden State Veterinary Specialists to provide nutrition consultation services
• Ongoing case management and primary medical responsibility remain with the referring veterinarian

Upon referral approval, consultations may be conducted either:

• Directly with the referring veterinarian (DVM-to-DVM consultation), or
• With the pet owner for diet formulation, nutritional counseling, and follow-up

All consultations are performed in coordination with, and communicated back to, the referring veterinarian to ensure continuity of care.
