A board-certified small animal internist is a veterinarian who has completed extensive advanced training beyond veterinary school, including an internship and a highly selective residency, and then passed rigorous examinations to earn the credential “Diplomate, ACVIM in Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM).”

These specialists focus on diagnosing and treating complex diseases in dogs and cats that affect internal organ systems - such as endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal disease, infectious disease, kidney and liver conditions, and much more. Because of their advanced training and expertise, they often collaborate closely with primary care veterinarians and other specialists to provide the highest level of care.
 
Dr. Harmeet Aulakh is a Board-Certified Small Animal Internist and the founder of Golden State Veterinary Specialists. She earned her Veterinary Degree from Punjab Agricultural University in India. She went on to complete a Master’s degree in preventive medicine and epidemiology at the same institution. She completed the Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) program at Louisiana State University (LSU) and received certification from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Dr. Aulakh worked as general practitioner for about 5 years, prior to joining a small animal rotating internship at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and subsequently pursued a residency in small animal internal medicine at both the University of Illinois and Louisiana State University. Upon completing her residency, Dr. Aulakh joined the faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she contributed to clinical practice, research, and teaching.

With a distinguished career in small animal internal medicine, Dr. Harmeet Aulakh is a highly respected specialist known for exceptional clinical expertise, innovative problem-solving, and a deep commitment to advancing veterinary education. Having trained numerous DVM students, interns, and residents, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of veterinarians, instilling in them a passion for excellence, critical thinking, and compassionate patient care.

Over the years, Dr. H. Aulakh has given several continuing education lectures to the practicing DVMs and taught hands-on laboratories for the DVM students, interns and residents. She has published numerous research articles and authored several book chapters.

Dr. Aulakh is not currently accepting direct client referrals but is available to provide case consultations and support for referring veterinarians managing complicated internal medicine cases.
 

Dr. Aulakh recently joined Western University of Health Sciences as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine. In this academic role, she will contribute clinical teaching, student mentorship, and the advancement of evidence-based specialty medicine. Her appointment reflects a continued commitment to academic leadership, collaborative learning, and elevating the standard of veterinary care within our profession.

Dr. H. Aulakh served as Assistant Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine for over five years. During her tenure, she provided clinical instruction to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students, mentored rotating interns, and trained internal medicine residents within a tertiary referral teaching hospital environment.

As a clinician, educator, and researcher at LSU, she was recognized multiple times for her dedication to teaching excellence and academic leadership. Her honors include:

From an early stage in her academic career, Dr. Aulakh demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence. She was a recipient of a national essay writing award during high school and earned merit-based scholarships during both her bachelor’s and master’s veterinary degree programs.
