Dr. Aulakh's Professional Journey and Contributions to Veterinary Surgery

Dr. Karanvir S. Aulakh is a board-certified veterinary surgeon with a distinguished career in clinical excellence, education, and research. His professional journey has been dedicated to advancing the field of veterinary surgical specialties while mentoring the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Dr. Aulakh earned his BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He pursued advanced training in basic science research in microbiology and tumor immunology, completing an MS in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, KY. He subsequently completed the ECFVG certification program at Louisiana State University, receiving his professional certification through the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Following this, Dr. Aulakh completed a rotating internship, a surgical internship, and a small animal surgery residency at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Blacksburg, VA. During his residency, he also earned a second MS in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences from Virginia Tech University. He went on to achieve board certification with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

Dr. Aulakh served as a Tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM), where he was also Chief of the Small Animal Surgery Service and Director of the ACVS-Approved Small Animal Surgery Residency Program for eight years. In these leadership roles, he was instrumental in advancing surgical education and fostering multi-institutional research collaborations with Virginia Tech, University of Missouri, Texas A&M University, Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (Houston), and industry partners such as Exubrion Therapeutics (Buford, GA).

His collaborative research has focused on developing innovative treatments for orthopedic conditions in small animals, particularly elbow osteoarthritis. He has been awarded approximately 30 research grants, authored more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, published over 30 scientific abstracts, and delivered numerous podium presentations at national and international meetings. He is also an invited speaker and instructor at regional, national, and international veterinary surgery conferences.

One of his most notable contributions was leading a multi-year clinical trial, “Prospective Clinical Evaluation of Intra-Articular Injection of Tin-117m (Synovetin OA) for the Treatment of Naturally Occurring Elbow Osteoarthritis in Dogs.” The results of this trial, published in Veterinary Medicine: Research and Reports, played a key role in the FDA recognition of Synovetin OA as a safe and effective device. Dr. Aulakh has also served as a reviewer of veterinary surgery textbooks, as well as for leading scientific journals, and has acted as a judge of scientific abstracts at professional meetings. His dedication to teaching and mentorship has been equally impactful—he has trained 16 surgery residents, 18 surgical interns, and over 70 rotating interns in small animal surgery and medicine, while also teaching numerous DVM and MS courses at multiple universities. His excellence in education has been recognized with the Dean's Teacher Merit Honor Award on multiple occasions.

Clinically, Dr. Aulakh's expertise spans orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery, neurologic surgery, and oncologic surgery. Beyond his academic career, he has also served as Head of the Small Animal Surgery Service at an emergency and specialty hospital, where he applied his advanced skills in high-demand clinical environments.

Dr. Aulakh is now pursuing his long-term goal of entrepreneurship by establishing his own business, providing mobile veterinary surgery services to the community—an innovative approach aimed at expanding access to specialty surgical care for small animals.
